According to the Speaker of Parliament, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has approved a bill that would decriminalise homosexuality. Advocates for LGBTQ+ rights applaud this decision. Although homosexuality is still illegal and punishable by jail time and fines, advocates have long fought for a change. The Supreme Court decided that the proposed measure was not unconstitutional after hearing arguments from both parties.
The decision has been hailed as a “historic development,” but proponents of the bill must still win over lawmakers. Both the administration and the opposition have yet to comment.
