The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs started using electronic visas on Thursday.

E-visas will take the role of passport visa stickers starting with seven nations, and they’ll make it feasible to get visitor information by scanning a QR Code.

The programme is a step in a strategy to automate and enhance the standard of consular services.

To accommodate rising tourism, Saudi Arabia started issuing e-visas in late 2019.

Electronic visas can now be issued by Saudi missions in the UAE, Jordan, Egypt, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The ministry plans to use cutting-edge technology to create a system for issuing visas, including work permits, residency permits, and visit visas.

It said last year that tourists might use the e-visa services form on its website to apply for a “personal visit” visa to visit friends who are Saudi citizens.

The 90-day visa allows travellers to travel throughout the kingdom, including to do the Umrah and offer prayers in the two holy cities.

Saudi Arabia continues to grow its hospitality, tourist, and travel sectors in an effort to diversify its economy away from the oil industry. By 2030, Saudi Arabia wants to build 315,000 new hotel rooms at an estimated development cost of $37.8 billion.

With the anticipated additions, there would be roughly 450,000 hotel rooms overall, with initiatives like the cutting-edge city of Neom paving the way.
