National Technology Day History

Every year on May 11th, India celebrates National Technology Day to remember its successful nuclear test in Pokhran, Rajasthan, in 1998. India conducted a series of five nuclear tests on May 11, 1998, at the Pokhran test site in Rajasthan, under the codename Pokhran-II. In order to recognise the scientists and engineers who carried out the nuclear tests and to recognise India’s technological advances, the Indian government proclaimed May 11th as National Technology Day.

A thermonuclear explosive, commonly known as a hydrogen bomb, was used in these tests for the first time ever in India. India became a nuclear power after the tests were successful, and it now belongs to the select club of countries with nuclear weapons.

In order to celebrate the scientists and engineers who made a significant contribution to the success of the nuclear testing, the Indian government established National Technology Day. The day also honours India’s technological achievements in a number of industries, including communications, defence technology, agriculture, and healthcare. Since then, National Technology Day has been celebrated annually to encourage India’s advancement in science and technology.
