Lionel Messi wins Laureus sportsman of the year
At the Laureus World Sports Awards, Lionel Messi was recognised as the sportsman of the year.
Argentina, which defeated France on penalties in the thrilling final last year, also accepted the team of the year award on behalf of Messi, who in Qatar finally accomplished his World Cup ambition.
Just hours after it was made official that the 35-year-old had rejoined Paris Saint-Germain after serving a club suspension, the ceremony in Paris where he accepted the awards took place.
At a ceremony in Paris, Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina who won the 2022 World Cup, received the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award. The Argentina men’s football team, which won the tournament in Qatar, also had Messi collect the World Team of the Year title on their behalf. Additionally, Messi made history by winning both the World Team of the Year Award and the World Sportsman of the Year Award in the same calendar year.
