At the Laureus World Sports Awards, Lionel Messi was recognised as the sportsman of the year.

Argentina, which defeated France on penalties in the thrilling final last year, also accepted the team of the year award on behalf of Messi, who in Qatar finally accomplished his World Cup ambition.

Just hours after it was made official that the 35-year-old had rejoined Paris Saint-Germain after serving a club suspension, the ceremony in Paris where he accepted the awards took place.
